Kate Yuen Photography bio picture
  • Hello!

I'm Kate Yuen, a professional photographer based out of Philadelphia, working in the greater Philadelphia, Chesapeake and Annapolis areas. I love telling stories and seeing the art in the world around us. Happiness is my greatest goal in life. I am an artist more than a scholar, and a cat person more than a dog person, and most importantly, I love with passion. I have a special place in my heart for the military since I've got a great guy in my life who's NAVY all the way! I hope you enjoy my take on life and photography and all the great things in between! I am available to shoot portraits and WEDDINGS! I can travel too! Send me an email for more information :)

Being disconnected

So yesterday, I dropped my phone in the sink. While the water was on. My phones have previously fallen victim to the almighty and powerful element but not in quite sometime. This little “blackout” from being connected people is WEIRD. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it. I spent all afternoon yesterday frolicking in Center City with an amazing friend (and bridesmaid) and it was so relaxing! I didn’t feel attached to anything, I was a free spirit! Well.. you get what I mean. Hopefully I can render this lack of communication issue later today at the Apple Store but for now I’m GOING SOLO!

Here’s to an amazing weekend for all! I’m so excited for the Ring Dance and I can’t wait to share it with you!

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT I’M DOING RING DANCE MINI PHOTO SESSIONS ON THE YARD THIS SATURDAY AT 3PM! EMAIL ME FOR DETAILS AND I’LL GET BACK TO  YOU ASAP!

xox,

katie

A subdued voice

Today is going to be a really personal post… It’s about the importance of having a voice and USING IT. I was recently told someone’s opinion- they thought my artistic voice was subdued. I thought about this a lot, and realized, whether or not my artistic voice is actually subdued, my personal voice and ability to speak about certain things is most definitely subdued. I’ve always been the thoughtful Pisces, afraid of conflict, always trying to make everyone happy. Time and time again, I learn that I can’t make everyone happy, and sometimes I need to speak my mind and have my voice be heard. Not only did it take me 20 years to figure out how to argue without crying, I can only disagree/argue/have a heated discussion with opinions flying with one person without bursting into tears. It’s a character flaw that I’m *trying* to work on, but this is something that needs PRACTICE. Who wants to practice fighting with people?! Certainly not me.

I could blame society for allowing my generation to grow up with screens and losing our ability to communicate effectively with real people in real time.. But really, there’s no one to blame. This is something only I can fix, that only I can take responsibility for how i interact with the people in my life.

So here’s to conquering fears and learning how to speak, fight, and communicate, because life is so much less interesting when you’re just sliding by complacently. And now you know a little bit more about me! :)

A bit of housekeeping!

It’s been a busy few months and this week has been the first chance for me to finally slow down. It’s exciting to be so relaxed and hanging out with my family but tomorrow I start the whirlwind that is my summer! Lots of driving with the windows down (weather pending.. please don’t rain!) and seeing people I love all over the place! Also, a lot of PHOTOGRAPHY! Here’s a little look at the next couple weeks, with lots of things that will be on the blog!!! Woo!

  • I’m taking home a pretty iMac! My family is moving back to the PC world, my conversion efforts failed, but that means I’m inheriting a beautiful 21″ screen that I get to make the home of Kate Yuen Photography! :D
  • That means I’m upgrading to the CS6 Design Suite! I’ve had CS4 for a couple years and loved working with CS5 at school.. so this should be a lot of fun! (Computer nerd alert!!)
  • I have not one, but TWO sessions next week with 2 amazing couples I’m so looking forward to getting to know them better!
  • RING DANCE IS NEXT SATURDAY! My dress will be finished and it will be a FABULOUS weekend to celebrate the end of Andrew’s 2/C Year at the Naval Academy!
  • USNA Graduation is just around the corner for the class of 2012 and I can’t wait to see the events unfold!
  • Michelle and Joseph’s wedding is in 20 days! OH MY GOODNESS EXCITEMENT!
  • The beginning of June my best friend is coming home from Idaho for a few days and it’s going to be the best time ever

So lots going on for me! I can’t wait to share more and get back onto a SCHEDULE! Sleeping in until 11 was great but the days a wastin’!

Every post is better with a picture, so here’s a sneak peek of Matt’s senior session- to be blogged next week!

Family Matters

More recently than I ever have in the past, I’ve been feeling the importance of family pictures. Not even the nice ones you go to another photographer for, but ones of your loved ones, just being themselves in an everyday kind of way. I’ve started to turn my camera on my family more this year, in an effort to capture this time in our lives! Sentimental yes, but also practical. I want to be able to look back and remember these times because I am nostalgic like that. So enjoy some random pictures of most of my siblings, and be happy we aren’t related to you ;)

Enlightenment has been bestowed upon him..

I love my family to pieces and I am so excited they all live pretty close so we can be together as much as possible before I move off into the big bad world after graduation and my WEDDING! Speaking of weddings, WE OFFICIALLY HAVE A VENUE! So so so so so excited to get married by the lake I passed everyday growing up :) I cannot thank my neighbors enough. And I have way too many family and friends to tell individually, so alas- my weddings news goes on the blog!

Wedding update! | Big News

It’s 395 days until the big day! The time just keeps flying by, and I can only imagine its going to go FASTER and FASTER! I’ve just finished classes and my JUNIOR YEAR at Temple and I can’t believe how quickly that’s gone by either! A lot of big changes have been made and I thought a wedding update was the perfect thing for the blogpost today!

OUR BIGGEST NEWS: Annapolis is no longer the city we’ll be married in. After a lot of discussion we have had a change of heart, and despite the charm and loveliness the city by the bay gives us, Andrew and I are really looking forward to starting our new life in my hometown, Milford, PA. We have a lot more history there, and it’s so much closer to our family and friends. As soon as we made this decision SO MUCH weight felt like it was lifted from our shoulders! Wedding planning has become FUN again! We’re still updating our wedding website with all of our information as new plans develop, for anyone who looks :)

I hope everyone does well on their finals! xoxo
